As this post is about work, most of it will only be available for paid subscribers, still, I hope there’s something for everyone here regardless. I am writing a lot at the moment, but life is pretty busy. Protecting your writing time is vitally important if you are going to produce anything any good. This is why a lot of writers choose not to work from home, because there is always something you can be doing instead of writing. I find I produce decent work only when I am totally ruthless about not being disturbed. This from Nicolette Jones is very good on exactly how ruthless you have to be. Obviously, you don’t need to be a prick about it, but at some stage, if you are ever going to produce something of any quality, you have to get people to leave you alone to get on with it. There is, after all, only one person who can get the words down. I don’t make or take phone calls from anyone when I am writing (Mr I, but that’s it and he would only call in an emergency). This is easy for me as I dislike the telephone anyway and think they are an invasion of privacy. We don’t even have a house phone, it’s just for broadband. I find a house phone is conducive to people calling ‘for a chat’ or because they want something. Not helpful for a writer mid-flow.
